Dorm Room Organizing

Any college student living in a dorm room will tell you that organization is usually a chore. This is partly because of having too many things, too little room and very little time to organize the dorm room. Fortunately, there are a few easy tips that you can use to gain a very organized living area.

1. Planning is crucial

You have to write a list of all the things in the room and categorize them according to importance. You can then keep the
important items and rid of the rest. The next step is arranging them in order of frequency of use, value, size and the like. Having a list laid out on paper will greatly reduce the actual work that will go into the dorm room organization.

2. Use curtains and blinds

These will help you in demarcating the limited space in your dorm room. For instance, you could use a curtain to set apart the sleeping area, storage area etc. You can also color coordinate them in order to make your dorm room more esthetically pleasing.

3. Use containers

This is one of the easiest ways to keep organized for the long haul. You should have a bin for dropping dirty clothes, waste
papers etc. In that same respect, you could get a shoe rack of you have many pairs of footwear, clothes hangers to help in keeping clean clothes well organized etc. Also, there are shelves that can be easily installed and help in utilizing free space e.g. walls. Finally, invest in air tight containers e.g. Ziploc bags to keep food in so as not to attract insects into your dorm room.

4. Include roommates

Any organization activity has to be a collective effort among all roommates. This will allow you to develop a plan that suites
everyone. The manual work will also be done within a very short time and can be enjoyable due to the company. Also, the work put in will make everyone help in maintaining the organization job for the longest time in order to put off reorganization.

5. Special beds

If the dorm room is occupied by more than one person, you could consider using bunk or loft beds. This will allow you to take
advantage of air space while keeping the entire dorm room well organized. The space under the bed can then be used to store
infrequently used items like suitcases, memorabilia etc.

6. Utilize labels

Using labels is a very good way to remember the positioning of all the items in the dorm room. For instance, you can label the area that’s to be used for keeping academic materials, dirty clothes etc. Labels are also a good way to remind roommates about organization without having to constantly nag them.

In a nutshell, keeping a dorm room well organized just requires a little creativity and collective effort by all concerned members. You’ll also find it relatively easy to maintain the organization because of the minimal space you have.
